What is a concept design?

A concept design refers to the initial phase of the design process where the overall vision, style, and direction for the space are defined. It's essentially the blueprint for how the interior will look and feel, capturing the essence of the space through visual, functional, and aesthetic ideas. The concept design lays out the main themes and elements that will guide the development of the space.

Key aspects of a concept design typically include:

  1. Design Concept or Theme: The overall idea or inspiration behind the design. This could be based on a specific style (modern, minimalist, industrial, etc.), colour scheme, cultural influences, or a unique narrative.

  2. Mood Boards: Visual collages that help express the mood, colours, materials, and furniture types that will be used in the space. It serves as a guide for creating the right ambiance and atmosphere.

  3. Spatial Planning: An outline of how the space will be arranged, including furniture placement, circulation paths, and the flow of activities.

  4. Material and Colour Selection: Preliminary choices for materials (flooring, wall finishes, fabrics, etc.) and colour schemes that will reflect the intended style and functionality of the space.

  5. Furniture and Fixtures: Selection of initial furniture pieces, lighting, and fixtures that align with the design concept, helping to visualize how the space will be furnished.

  6. Functionality and User Needs: Addressing the specific needs of the people who will use the space, ensuring that the design is both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

This concept design is presented to the client (or team) for feedback and is refined over time until it evolves into detailed design plans and drawings for construction or final implementation.
